Jewelry Renovation FAQs

How does jewelry renovation work?

We typically begin with a brief phone consultation where we will review photos of the jewelry you would like to renovate and discuss your style and what types of pieces you might like to create. After your consultation, we'll send over a proposal with sketches, pricing, and descriptions for each design we suggest. Once you've selected designs, we'll send an insured FedEx label and specific packaging instructions so safely send us your jewelry. You are also welcome to drop by our NYC studio. Our production time is about 3-4 months.

How long does it take to complete a jewelry renovation project?

Our production time on each project is typically about 3 months. We do not like to rush this careful work, and only take on a limited number of projects per month.

What is fine jewelry?

We use fine materials and time honored fine jewelry techniques to create lasting jewelry. We work in gold and platinum, bringing our highest quality of craftsmanship to each project, whether we’re working with your finest diamonds or your baby teeth. We treat all of our projects with the same respect and care.

What does it cost to renovate jewelry?

We price each custom project individually and present complete pricing with our proposals. Costs vary depending on the type of piece, labor, complexity, and materials involved in your project.

Many of our projects are in the $1500-$6000 range. We have beautiful design concepts under $1500 if you are open to suggestions. We can apply the value of any extra gold or platinum from your original materials towards the cost of your project.

Where is your jewelry made?

Our studio and office is located in the Flatiron neighborhood in NYC!

Gold Credit

We are always happy to re-use and recycle your precious metals as much as possible during your renovation project. We can recycle your excess precious metals (gold & platinum) and apply a credit towards your project. Most of our clients recycle gold with us to reduce their total project cost. This credit gets applied to your final invoice.

Gold is credited by purity and weight. It's difficult to judge weight from a photograph, however you can see the three examples above to get a ballpark idea. If you would like to estimate what credit you might have, we recommend using a kitchen or postal scale at home, or we're happy to weigh it for you upon arrival in our studio. You can determine the approximate purity of the gold by looking for small stamps inside of your jewelry or around the clasps/closures. Gold is stamped by purity in percentage or karat, for example 585 or 14k.

If you aren't able to weigh your jewelry, you can use the image below as a rough guide to set your expectations. Each image is of all 14k gold pieces. Light extras is typical of $125-$250 of credit. Pocket full of gold is typical of $500-$750 of credit. Treasure chest is typical of $1750-$3200 of credit. We hope that helps!

Gold Credit FAQs

Can I use my own gold to create new jewelry?

Yes! It depends a bit on the design you select, but we can typically melt and alloy your gold to use in your project. We reserve this very specialized offering for projects where the gold itself is extremely sentimental.

Alternatively, our typical process is to group recycle your gold with gold from our other clients and offer you a credit towards your invoice.

How can I use sentimental gold?

We typically will use your sentimental gold in a piece where it is the focus and will be featured, such as a gold band. First we will melt and purify your gold. Sometimes we need to add additional pure gold to create a consistent alloy or to have enough gold for your new jewelry. We do charge a small fee for this service as it takes quite a bit of extra time and process to create your new pieces. We can not make chain from sentimental gold unfortunately.

Can you use my silver and other metals in my new piece?

We're happy to recycle silver for you, however the credit is very small in today's market. We typically recommend holding on to intact silver pieces that aren't being used for your project (they make excellent dress-up treasures for a child in your life!) or donating them.
